Gemadro coffee is among the finest coffees in the world. It is produced in the conserved natural environment to manifest its natural inherent cup quality. This shade grown Arabica is refined and of unique flavor; balancing bitterness with elegant body and fruity nuances that hint at jasmine and citrus, is primed for the gourmet market.

Gemadro coffee plantation is located in the lush highlands of Southwestern Ethiopia, widely accepted as being the source of Coffee Arabica. The rolling hills and valleys are covered with indigenous forests and are over flowing with crystal clear streams, springs and rivers. The plantation covers a total of 2,217 hectares of which 1,215 hectares is under coffee plantation. In an effort to maintain the local ecology and biodiversity the Plantation has left 942 hectares ... under forest while the remaining 60 hectares has been set aside for infrastructure.

Duyina Coffee Farm, about 30 km from Gemadro was established in 2008. Gemadro which is of high yield premium quality coffee has encouraged the establishment of the Duyina Coffee Farm. Duyina is the name of the village of the plantation site from where the name Duyina Coffee was adopted. The Duyina coffee farm climate and soil is similar to that of Gemadro. This part of Ethiopia is considered to be the home of Coffee arabica. Here one finds the optimum soil and climatic condition which nature seems to have it designed for coffee production.

The farm covers a total of 1,574 ha. of which 1,000 hectares is under coffee plantation, 400 ha. which are hills and gorges remain ... covered with indigenous forest trees and shrubs.

BBeha, the fourth coffee farm is located in southern Ethiopia region. So far, 288 hectares is currently under cultivation. The coffee, which is exclusively arabica, is considered among the best Ethiopian high land coffees like Gemadro.
Conserving our environment
GThe southern forests in Ethiopia are essential for the ecology in protecting the environmental dynamics, water quality, wildlife species and most importantly it is one of the last remaining forest coffees that contain the only genetic material of coffee arabica. ... At present, deforestation trends are serious concerns in the southwestern coffee producing parts of Ethiopia, putting at stake the existing rich biodiversity.

Bebeka Coffee Farm

Bebeka Coffee Estate S.C. is the biggest non-fragmented coffee plantation in the world located in the Southwest part of Ethiopia, about 610 km from Addis Ababa. This over 10,000 hectares estate is uniquely situated in the remnant tropical rainforests of the country, which is known to be part of the area identified as the original home of Arabica Coffee.

The farm surrounding area is predominantly inhabited by Bench People. Coffee is the primary cash crop and means of livelihood for most of the communities living here. Also, main food crops like maize, godere, enset, wheat and barley are cultivated by the local communities to a significant extent. And fruits, spices and honey are an important local source of their income.

Bebeka Coffee was established in 1975, and brought to the folds of Horizon in August 2011.

Of the total land area of 10,030 hectares under Bebeka, more than half (over 5,253 hectare), is covered with modern Arabica Coffee plantation. Blessed with ideal precipitation, as well as the luring fertility of the land and its rich agro ecology, all the coffee trees are grown under shade. All these in turn are known to improve their quality significantly, giving the coffee beans a unique aroma, flavor, acidity and body. Thus, among others, guaranteeing the supply of the best quality traceable coffee in sustainable manner is our hallmark.

Bebeka is enriched with over 26 varieties of Arabica coffee. Among many other coffees types, it produces the rare and antique variety – the world famous and indigenous Geisha. The farm takes exceptional care for its varieties, selection, production and processing through innovative technologies to present the market the finest and best quality coffee.

Limmu Coffee Farm

Jimma zone refers to the area west of the Gibe River and east of the Gojeb river. It is a historic place where the five Gibe oromo state/the Shenan Gibe Oromo’s/ were formed. Coffee is the most influential product influencing social, economical, political and ritual/religious affairs of the people of this area.

Like Bebeka, Limmu coffee farm was also one of the public owned enterprises, since its establishment in 1980, and has joined HORIZON Plantations in November 2013 after being privatized.

Limmu coffee farm is divided into six farms namely Gomma-1, Gomma-2, Kossa, Suntu, Gummer and Cheleleki, all of which situated at higher altitudes, in the range of 1500-2150 meters above sea level (masl). The six farms under Limmu coffee farm administration makes the farm the largest owner of modern coffee plantation in the country. Each of these six farms produces and supplies distinctly unique and traceable coffee type having unique flavors and aroma, due to the varying ecological and climatic attributes of each farm. In addition, to the ample rainfall that all our farms receive, they are all endowed with abundant river water that flows through the farms giving them an even greater potential for supplementary irrigation. Our farms have deep, well drained, friable and highly fertile soils that are rich in organic matter. Furthermore, they are characteristically brown to red in color and with pH values of 4.5 to 5.8; which in general makes them highly suitable for coffee growing.
