H.E Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi Awarded Honorary IAU Membership!

During the 32nd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAUGA2024) in Cape Town, South Africa, H.E. Dr. Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi was honored with an Honorary IAU Membership from Ethiopia. This prestigious award recognizes his remarkable contributions to the establishment of the Entoto Observatory and Research Center and his unwavering commitment to advancing astronomy in Ethiopia through his support of the Ethiopian Space Science Society (ESSS).

Sheikh Al-Amoudi, one of the esteemed founders of ESSS, played a pivotal role in its establishment in 2004. His dedication has been instrumental in securing essential funding for Ethiopia’s growing space and astronomy initiatives. His passion for astronomy is evident in the creation of two state-of-the-art one-meter research telescopes and associated facilities at the Entoto Observatory, a center that reflects his vision for advancing the frontiers of astronomy in Ethiopia.

A visionary thinker, Sheikh Al-Amoudi believes, “Humans will not live on Earth forever; they will reside in distinct realms of space.” His insights continue to inspire the pursuit of space science in Ethiopia.

As a longstanding board member of ESSS, Sheikh Al-Amoudi has consistently demonstrated his deep commitment to the field, solidifying his reputation as a true astronomy enthusiast. This Honorary Membership from the IAU Executive Committee follows a similar recognition in 2018 for H.E. Tefera Walwa, former patron of ESSS.
