Horizon Plantations PLC was established by the renowned business man Sheik Mohamed Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi and Ato Jemal Ahmed Abdishikur as a private limited company in 2000 E.C with a paid-up capital of 10 million Ethiopian Birr.

The company was constituted to engage in large-scale farming and Agro processing endeavor through development and production of various types of oilseeds to be annexed with huge oil refining plant intended to contribute on the prevalent widely unmet edible oil demand of the nation.

In line with this through anticipations of the investors to involve in the national economic development exertions, the company widely participated in privatization schemes of the government and gradually bought out large-scale public coffee estates/farms in the south-western part of the country in addition to a coffee processing & warehousing enterprise holding about 59 thousand square meters in the center of the metropolitan.

Duly it was handed the inefficiently managed Bebeka coffee plantation situated in Bench-Sheko zone of the South-Western Regional States and Limmu coffee plantation in Jimma zone of Oromia Regional State that amount to more than 25 thousand hectares beside the then huge coffee processing plant in Addis Ababa. Then, it had enormous investments to deliver significant improvements broadly exhibited in recent years in those organizations.

The company is led by a general manager who is accountable to the Deputy CEO of Agro Cluster of the MIG and is responsible in leading those operational and service providing business organizations through line and staff functional and structural units.

Thus, there are two deputy general managers of operations and resources at the head office to manage major farm operations and support activities of supplies and resources facilitation respectively. There are also farms/processing organizations managers who are directly accountable to the general manager of the company and responsible to manage their respective organizations’ operations and resources as the expected standard.

Staffing and Manpower Status

As of 2023 G.C report Horizon Plantations PLC has over 5,200 permanent and 10,000 seasonal employees that reach about 20,000 at peak operation period.

Current Development on Production and Marketing

The company currently manages 14,656 hectares of coffee plantations and harvests more than 300 thousand quintals of coffee cherry and produces more than 45 thousand quintals of clean coffee on average per annum for both export and local market. Besides, it has been producing and marketing:

  • Various fruits: banana, pineapple;
  • Cereals: maize;
  • Spices: black pepper, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, etc.;
  • Honey;
  • Milk; etc…

In addition, the company has been rendering coffee processing and warehousing services for both in-house and external customers across the country through its coffee processing & warehousing in Addis Ababa.

Moreover, it has been engaging in the production and supply of jute bags, roasted, ground and packed coffee production & supply of briquettes from the by-product of coffee processing.

Future Plan

Sticking on the recently approved strategic plan of organizations under the company, it has planned to:

  • Improve the existing yield of coffee to 9.5 quintals per hectare on average;
  • Improve the existing fewer than 100 quintals per hectare of banana to more than 220 quintals;
  • Improve the existing pineapple productivity to more than 250 quintals per hectare;
  • The company has planned and is on the move to develop oilseeds on its 20,000 hectares concession at Guba, Benshangu-Gumz Regional state.

Besides, it has commenced the handing over of 40,000 hectares of land from Somali Regional state that is intended to establish large-scale integrated farming and Agro-processing scheme in the region.
