New Perennial Rice Varieties introduced as symbol of Driving New Era of Agricultural Transformation‎Officials visit MIDROC Investment Group’s six perennial rice varieties being tested under an agreement signed between Saudi Star Agricultural Development and the Ethiopian Institute of Bio and Emerging Technology.‎

‎This rice variety is classified as one of the best agricultural discoveries of the century with capability of producing harvests three times a year for six to eight consecutive years.

‎ The technology, according to experts, does not require annual plowing, sowing and weeding and offers many benefits in terms of reducing production costs, maintaining soil fertility and reducing weed infestation

‎The visit was attended by the president of the Gambella National Regional State Alemitu Omod, and the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development, Employment and Technology Affairs of the House of People’s Representatives, Negerie Lencho (PhD).

‎In her remarks, Alemitu stated that government agencies, research institutions, universities and private organizations will work together to promote this versatile rice variety.

‎Negerie Lencho (PhD) on his part, praised MIDROC investment group for its contribution to the development of the country, especially in the agricultural sector.

‎Berhanu Tesfaye, Director of Agricultural Development at Saudi Star remarked that it is Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Ali Al-Amoudi’s, the owner of the institution, utmost vision to provide rice seeds to farmers in a sustainable manner and to support efforts to ensure Ethiopia’s food security by producing the product on a large scale in the company’s farms.

‎Alongside the visit, experience sharing was held between experts from the country and Yunnan University in China on the promotion of the technology.

‎Alemayehu Dingiya (PhD), Corporate Director of the Directorate of Research and Development in the Agricultural Sector at MIDROC, additionally, said the technology has created a good opportunity for Saudi Star to achieve the extensive rice development that it had been trying to achieve.
‎ He urged that the challenges that may be faced when harvesting with a combine, the ratooning capacity of the varieties and the nutrient content of the varieties be addressed.

‎It is stated in its efforts to ensure food security in Ethiopia, MIDROC Investment Group will continue to strengthen its strategic role in supporting farmers and national agricultural development by using modern technologies.
